Arrived in the morning to find the car park awash with a high tide and big wind.
After a couple of hours the lake was sailable so I rigged up a 5.8 and went out.
Never really got going properly, so I came in to get some advice on a new 2004 Naish Stealth 5.0 which a have just bought. I rigged the sail up on the Ezzt RDM mast which I have, just to see if it looked OK and get some tuning tips from the pro's. Just as I had rigged it the wind switched up a gear in an instant and it was 5m weather - sometimes you're just lucky!
Went out with the 5m and the next two hours were fantastic sailing - the flattest water I have seen at WK for a long time, combined with a strong steady wind and a small number of people sailing - Magic.
One memorable moment was, as I blasted down the wall at my current maximum velocity (35kts), I heard a ripping noise and feared that my sail had torn, when I looked to my right I realised that the noise was in fact Martin van Meurs who sailed past me on the inside as if I was stood still. At the end of the run I asked Martin what max speed he had on the clock for that run - 45kts was his reply.
What I think is one of the great things about speedsurfing is that the lowest beginner can sail side by side with the fastest men in the sport. Can you name me one other sport where this is the case?
Martin and Dirk sailed with fantastic control and speed and ripped up the water with great style.
Inspirational stuff!
