Strong northwesterly. Evans Bay was too windy to sail (I only have a 6.3m) with solid 35 gusting perhaps 45 and 1.5m swells rolling through. Boogie suggested trying Lyall Bay which is directly on the opposite side and is a popular wave sailing spot in a southerly. The NW is already quite gusty but even more so at Lyall Bay as it is now blowing offshore. I needed to sail around 4-500m offshore to get the best wind (it's a bay so is 'U' shaped so could launch from one side where it was quite light) and it was pretty choppy.

I found it hard to get any solid runs in as the wind was so gusty (5 to 35 knots) with no constant direction. So any acceleration was quickly snuffed out.

Towards the end the wind changed even more west, and seemed to be blowing from straight over the hills - it was pretty consistent considering the direction (but it was still crap!), but this allowed sailing a fair bit closer to shore in relatively strong wind and slightly flatter water. This helped to increase the speed a fair bit.

Used Boogies X1 25cm which was a dream to sail on. Such a smooth ride in the chop and gives you the confidence to go deep over swells without the fear of spin out or catching a rail. Afterwards Boogie said I should have tried the X2 - as he said this gives an even smoother ride in the chop. Guess that will have to wait till next time.
